‘Planet’ steam locomotive (video)

On Sunday, after seeing the Chinese dragon, I went to The Museum of Science and Industry, where I shot this short video. On certain dates and holidays they have steam train rides.

The locomotive is a replica of ‘Planet’. The original was built in 1830 by Robert Stephenson for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. In fact the Museum is on the site of the world’s first passenger railway station, which was for the Manchester to Liverpool line.

I was surprised how quiet the locomotive is. I can see why people love these.

YouTube has a rather-good video clip from a more adventurous camera angle.

I remember seeing steam trains when they were still running in the 1960’s. I believe we went on at least one holiday on one and also there was a private railway line behind my Grandma’s house which carried coal from a mine to the main railway network.
