Smashing Time, baby

A sequence from the rarely-seen 1960′s British comedy Smashing Time, starring Lynn Redgrave and Rita Tushingham.

Yvonne ‘can’t sing’ but she’s ‘young’ which means that, with a bit of trickery in the recording studio, she can have a hit record. Even forty years ago, people were cynical about pop.

Watching the BBC’s Rock and Roll Years, one day, this Helen Shapiro promo appeared and I realised that the Smashing Time sequence is a spoof of it (love the elderly backing singers).

See this film if you ever get the chance. The storyline is a bit drawn out but it has some marvellous sequences and cameo appearances. Not to mention shots of London (especially Camden) in the 1960′s.
