Photographers seen as ‘potential criminals’

‘Photographers are increasingly being viewed as potential criminals by police, according to the Bureau of Freelance Photographers (BFP), which has reported a rise in complaints from members.’ Read more.

There seems to be an ever-growing number of cases of photographers — both professional and amateur — being harrassed by the police. They’re stopped and questioned, told to move on or prevented from taking pictures, films are confiscated.

One man has received an apology after he was stopped from taking photographs of the Christmas lights switch on in Ipswich.

‘The simple fact is that the police do not have the right, except in exceptional circumstances, to stop people taking pictures in public places,’ said BFP spokesman John Tracy.
