Lou takes me to task

Lou has written about some of my criticism of Manchester Pride, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation and what she describes as my ‘legitimisation of the BNP’:

When Pride is a Protest

G7’s legitimisation of the BNP

G7 v LGF

I’ve posted some comments.

Pride security try to prevent filming in a public place / Candlelit Vigil (video)

For the last three years we have filmed at the gates on the night of the Manchester Pride HIV/AIDS Candlelit Vigil. Entry to the Vigil is supposed to be free and the community was promised it would always remain so when tickets and fences were introduced (first for for Mardi Gras 1999 and then again from 2003 onwards).

However, in recent years we have gathered hard evidence on camera that sometimes people who only want to go to the Vigil are told they must buy an expensive Pride ticket or are made to queue for a prolonged period.

This year the security people tried to prevent us filming, even though we were on a public street. (more…)

Andrew Stokes at Manchester Pride 2009

Imagine the scene… You’re the Chair of Manchester Pride. It’s one of your busiest days of the year — the Saturday Pride parade — and the entrants are getting ready to move off. Usually you eat healthy stuff but you think, just this once, you’ll sneak into the nearby takeaway and have nasty pie and chips.

Who is the last person you want to bump into, holding a camera, on your way out? (more…)

Free Manchester Pride alternative on Saturday afternoon

Manchester will ‘reclaim the scene’ with a free picnic after the Saturday Pride parade.

There will be free food, activities and performers from 16.00 onwards. It’s all happening outside UMIST on the grass area at the junction of Sackville Street and Granby Row. Near the Retro Bar and the Spar shop on Sackville Street.

It’s non-profit and any money raised goes to help LGBT people in Iraq.

This looks like being fun and quite a big event. We hope to have some video coverage here from Sunday.

On Monday, the closing night of Manchester Pride, there will be a Liberation 2009 march from All Saints Park to the gay village. It starts at 18.30.
