Reclaim the Scene aims to build on last year, which was its first event, with another post-Pride-parade picnic and (Out of the) Village Fete. This year we're promised it will be 'bigger and better than ever, with free food, performers, live art, stalls, music, and kids' entertainment!'

Manchester Police harrass World Naked Bike Riders

Last Friday’s outing was the fourth annual Naked Bike Ride in Manchester.

Mandelson hit by slime instead of sleaze, for a change

Unelected Business Secretary, ‘Lord’ Mandelson was hit by slime rather than sleaze when Leila Deen, a member of environmental group Plane Stupid, threw green custard over him this morning. The move was a ‘last resort’ after the democratic process had failed, she said.

Plane Stupid is campaigning against a third runway at Heathrow.

We hear lots about stress in the workplace. When you’re effectively ‘trapped’ in a job and can’t escape the cause of the stress, it’s a terrible thing. But recently I’ve discovered that stress can creep up on you slowly and unexpectedly.

More than 1000 people protested about Western media coverage of the Beijing Olympics and Tibet. After a two-hour demonstration outside the BBC, they marched up Oxford Street to Manchester Town Hall.

UPDATE (October 2008): due to controversy surrounding the actual motives behind the ‘queer trans bloc’, this video has ‘retired’ into the archives and I have withdrawn permission to show or distribute it. On a personal note, I filmed this event with the best of intentions: to report the march and record it for posterity.

Original text description:

Saturday 1 March 2008, The Reclaim the Night march set off from Manchester University on Sackville Street. Travelled along Oxford Road, Portland Street and through the gay village. Despite torrential rain everyone was in good spirits.

Well done to Manchester Libraries for the program of events they’re running for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) History Month. My guess is they haven’t had much money to spend on this and I hope next year they will be given more. But they’ve put on some interesting events.
