The teenage trio admitted killing Mugilan Sutherman

Mugilan Sutherman, 43, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, was attacked outside a Failsworth takeaway in 2005.

Guy Richardson, 18, of Hughes Close, Failsworth, admitted manslaughter and was detained for six years.

Kyle Bardsley, 18, and James Finnigan, 17, both of Failsworth, were detained for four years and nine months respectively at Manchester Crown Court.

The teenagers admitted manslaughter at a pre-trial hearing on 26 January.

They will serve their sentences in young offenders' institutions.

The judge lifted reporting restrictions and allowed 17-year-old Finnigan to be named.

At an earlier hearing the court was told Richardson punched the 43-year-old victim in the head outside a pizza restaurant on Oldham Road after he refused to give them a light in June last year.

One of the youths then smashed a metal peg from a BMX bike into his face, knocking him to the ground.

As his friends ran to help him, the gang kicked and stamped on the kitchen fitter as he lay on the ground.

'Destroyed lives'

Witnesses described them kicking his head as if it were a football.

Mr Sutherman, who had four sons and was originally from Singapore, was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital but later died from a head injury.

Senior Investigating Officer, Det Chf Insp John Piekos, said: "Mr Sutherman's tragic death has destroyed his family's lives and I can only hope that today has finally brought a closure for them and offered them some form of comfort.

"I hope today's sentences reassure the community that we are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and that they serve as a reminder to those getting involved in incidents like this that they will be dealt with robustly and will be brought to justice."
