Manchester Pride 2007 poster doesn't mention the word 'gay'

CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE

The 2007 poster for Manchester Pride doesn't mention the words 'gay, lesbian, transgender, bi'. It only has the abbreviation 'LGBT' in tiny print.

All a far cry from the original aims of Gay Pride -- which was to raise awareness and celebrate.

The organisers told us that there wasn't space on the poster for the words. Also that Manchester Pride is aimed at the 'LGBT community' who will know what the abbreviation stands for.

We thought this was all a bit crap and just another example of the way our community and Pride event has been taken over by self-interested big business, marketeers and the City Council. Also an echo of 1999 when a local radio station that was sponsoring Manchester Mardi Gras promoted it without mentioning that it was an LGBT event. The end result of that was that people faced homophobia from bigots who turned up to what they thought was just a party.

We went down to Canal Street to find out what people thought.
