Spar in Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, being lootedRiots and looting in Manchester

An exclusive video of the civil unrest and looting in Manchester city centre on Tuesday 9 August 2011. This followed riots in London during the previous days.

Having smashed up shops in the Arndale Centre and set fire to one on Market Street, the mob turned its attention to Piccadilly Plaza. The doors of The Spar, Quality Save, Ladbrokes, Marks and Spencer, the clothing store Cow, Starbucks and an amusement arcade were broken down and goods looted.

On Portland Street, the gang got into Dawsons Music through a broken window, trashed the inside and made off with keyboards, guitars, amps and a saxophone. A window repair company had turned up to fix the glass but the workman could only stand by his van and watch.

The till was grabbed from a newsagent's shop on the other side of the gardens and broken open behind the statue of Queen Victoria. A car burned in front of Minshull Street Court.

As the police dealt with one area, the mob ran to another and in some cases had ten minutes or so to carry out looting before the police caught up.

Duration: 10 mins.
